Card terminal

Connect your Boost card terminal so tapping Card at checkout sends the amount to the terminal and the approval comes back into Bookit.

Overview

Connect your Boost card terminal to Bookit so that tapping Card at checkout wakes the terminal with the amount already on it, and the approval comes straight back into the Bookit payment. Your cashier no longer keys the same amount twice. You set it up in settings → Checkout → Card terminal. It works with any terminal running the CardBiz app, whether the case says Castles or Newland.

Ask Boost to switch on network mode

You cannot do this step yourself. Your terminal has to be set to network (LAN) mode, and only the CardBiz team at Boost can do that. They do it remotely using your terminal's serial number.

  1. Find the serial number on the sticker underneath the terminal.
  2. Send Boost a message like this: "Hi, we use Bookit as our POS and would like to connect it to our card terminal. Could you please switch our terminal to network (LAN) mode so it accepts ECR connections? Our terminal serial number is [your serial number]. Thank you."
  3. Wait for Boost to confirm it is done. Allow a few working days.

Nothing below works until Boost confirms.

Connect the terminal to Bookit

  1. Connect the terminal to the same Wi-Fi as the device you take payments on. The terminal is an Android device, so you do this in its own Wi-Fi settings. Use your normal network, not a guest network.
  2. Ask whoever manages your Wi-Fi to reserve an IP address for the terminal, so the router does not give it a different address later.
  3. On the terminal, open its settings, then About, then Status, and note the IP address, for example 192.168.0.26.
  4. In the Bookit app, go to settings → Checkout → Card terminal.
  5. Turn on the card terminal.
  6. Choose network (LAN) as the connection and enter the IP address, for example 192.168.0.26. You do not need a port number.
  7. Tap Test connection and check that the terminal responds.

If the test fails, check the terminal is awake and on the same Wi-Fi as your device.

Send card payments to the terminal

  1. Go to settings → Checkout → Payment methods.
  2. Find the payment method your cashiers use for cards, usually Card.
  3. Turn on the option to charge on the card terminal when tapped.
  4. Tap Save.
  5. Ring up a sale and tap Card. The terminal should light up asking for the card.

Once the customer pays, the approval code, the last digits of the card and the invoice number are recorded on the Bookit payment.

FAQs

Does connecting the terminal cost extra?

No. Connecting your terminal to Bookit is free. Your card processing rates stay whatever you already agreed with Boost.

Can I set it up without Boost?

No. Only the CardBiz team can switch the terminal to network mode, using its serial number.

Which terminals work?

Any terminal running the CardBiz payment app, whatever brand is printed on it.

Do I need a cable?

No. The terminal and your device talk over your Wi-Fi.

Why can't I see the card terminal option?

You are probably using a web browser. Open Bookit in the iPhone or Android app instead.

Why does Test connection fail?

Check the terminal is awake and on the same Wi-Fi as your device. Guest Wi-Fi often has a setting called client isolation or AP isolation that stops devices talking to each other, so put both on your normal network. Also check Boost has confirmed network mode is switched on.

It worked before but Bookit can no longer find the terminal

The router has probably given the terminal a new IP address. Ask whoever manages your Wi-Fi to reserve an IP address for the terminal, then enter the current address in settings → Checkout → Card terminal.

My IT person says the terminal does not respond to ping

That is expected and not a fault. The terminal does not answer a normal network test.

The terminal printed an approval but Bookit doesn't show the payment

Do not tap Card again, as the customer may already have been charged. Check the printed slip, record the payment manually in Bookit, and contact Bookit support so they can look into it.

Is my customer's card information stored in Bookit?

No. The card never touches Bookit. The terminal deals with the bank, and Bookit only receives the approval code, the last digits of the card and the invoice number.

Can I refund a card payment from Bookit?

You can void a card payment on the same day, and Bookit voids it on the terminal too. Refunds after the day is settled are still done on the terminal itself.

Do I still settle on the terminal?

Yes. End-of-day settlement is unchanged. Press it on the terminal as you do today.
