Barcode scanner
Scan product barcodes and QR codes to add items to the cart at checkout, using a USB or Bluetooth scanner or your device's camera.
Overview
Scan a product's barcode at checkout and Bookit adds it to the cart, so you don't have to search the menu. You can scan with a USB or Bluetooth barcode scanner, or with your phone or tablet's camera. Bookit matches the code to the product's Reference, which is also the value printed on Bookit product labels.
Give your products a barcode
Bookit finds a product by its Reference.
- Go to Catalogues → Products and open the product.
- In the Reference field, scan or type the barcode already on the item's packaging, or tap Generate reference to create one.
- Tap Save.
If your products have no barcode, print labels for them with a Niimbot label printer. See the Label printer page.
Scan items into the cart with a scanner
USB and Bluetooth scanners that type the code like a keyboard work without any setup in Bookit.
- Connect the scanner to your device: plug in the USB cable, or pair it in your device's own Bluetooth settings.
- Open checkout.
- Scan the item. Bookit adds it to the cart and shows Added with the item name.
- Scan the same item again to add another one.
Scan items into the cart with the camera
- Open checkout and tap the scan icon on the menu or on the Review screen.
- Allow camera access if your device asks.
- Point the camera at the barcode or QR code. Each item you scan is added to the cart.
- Keep scanning, then tap Done when you are finished.
In the iPhone and Android apps the camera opens full screen. In a browser it opens in a panel.
What else you can scan
- Services, packages, vouchers and discounts: their barcodes and QR codes from the Barcode & QR card on each item add them to the cart too. Items with variants open the variant picker.
- Outside checkout: scan from the scan icon in the top bar, or with a scanner while you are not typing in a field, and Bookit opens the matching item instead of adding it to a cart.
FAQs
Do I need to pair the scanner in Bookit?
No. Bookit reads any scanner that types the code and then presses Enter, which is how most USB and Bluetooth barcode scanners work. Pair Bluetooth scanners in your device's settings, not in Bookit.
What does "No product matches the scanned code" mean?
No product has a Reference that matches the code exactly. Open the product, set its Reference to the code on the item, and scan again.
Why did the scan go into a text box instead of the cart?
Outside checkout, Bookit ignores scans while you are typing in a field, so the code lands in the field. Tap outside the field and scan again.
Does scanning a voucher redeem it?
No. Scanning a voucher's code at checkout sells that voucher. It does not redeem one a customer already owns.
My camera does not open
Allow camera access for Bookit in your browser or device settings. If you see Camera permission denied, change the permission and try again.
